How to Apply for Federal, State and University Financial Aid

Undergraduate, graduate, and law students at the UO should take the following steps to apply for financial aid:

  1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Renewal FAFSA, online at http://fafsa.ed.gov, or complete the paper application and mail it to the federal processor. Either type of FAFSA should be completed in the January prior to enrollment at the University of Oregon.

The paper FAFSA for the each academic year is typically available by December. Through the FAFSA web site a current Pre-Application Worksheet becomes available for students and families to review prior to the official online FAFSA becoming available January 1.

To obtain the FAFSA choose one of the following options:

Many types of funding are limited and may run out, so applying by the priority deadline is important. The UO deadline for priority consideration is March 1 for the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships to receive the application information from the federal processor. To allow time for your application to be processed and transmitted to the UO by our priority deadline, we encourage you to transmit, or mail your FAFSA to the federal processor by February 1. If you have not completed your tax forms by that time, we suggest that you use estimated figures.

For Tips on Completing the FAFSA, click here.

  2. List the UO's Title IV FAFSA code 003223, as one of your first choices of schools to receive the application information.

  3. Make a photocopy of the FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA for your records and mail the original to the federal processor. If you apply online, make sure to print a copy of the FAFSA for your records.

  4. Apply for admission to the University of Oregon.

You must apply (not be admitted) for admission before the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships can consider your eligibility for federal financial aid as well as scholarships. There are separate applications for admission and scholarships; to request an application packet for admission to the UO, call the Office of Admissions at: (541) 346-3201 or 1-800-BE-A-DUCK ( 1-800-232-3825 ). Or, apply online here!
