To receive and maintain eligibility for aid, a student must make satisfactory academic progress toward a degree. This means that a student must earn a minimum number of credits each term. Credit is earned for A, B, C, D and P. Credit is not earned for W, I, Y, N, AU and F. A student’s minimum credit requirement is determined by the enrollment level used in determining his/her aid eligibility, as follows:
| |
UNDERGRADUATE |
GRADUATE |
ENROLLMENT LEVEL |
MINIMUM CREDIT COMPLETION REQUIREMENT |
Full time |
12 credits |
9 credits |
Three quarter time |
9 credits |
7 credits |
Half time |
6 credits |
5 credits |
At the end of summer, fall and winter terms, the number of credits a student has earned is compared to his/her minimum credit requirement. Depending on the number of credits earned, the student is then set to either satisfactory, warning, probation or hold status as follows:
NUMBER OF EARNED CREDITS |
STATUS |
Minimum completed |
Satisfactory |
1-4 credits less than the minimum |
Warning |
5 or more credits less than the minimum, but at least one credit completed |
Probation |
No credits completed |
Hold |
A student on HOLD is not eligible for aid until s/he either completes the equivalent of a full time term without aid or successfully petitions to have the aid released. Aid is defined as all federal, state, institutional and in most cases, private funds. For information regarding the petition process, see the following section.
Warning and probation mean that aid will be released for the following term. However, the student is required to make up all deficient credits by the end of spring term. At that time, the student’s minimum credit requirement for summer, fall, winter and spring are combined. If the student is deficient any number of credits, further aid is placed on HOLD.
Please note, since satisfactory academic progress is cumulative, the student can be placed on hold prior to the end of spring term if he/she completes so few credits in summer, fall, and winter that we cannot reasonably expect those credits to be made up by the end of spring.
PETITION PROCESS
Complete and submit a Satisfactory Academic Progress Petition. Forms are available in the Office of Student Financial Aid. Petitions for reinstatement are approved only if the student can document extenuating circumstances and if there appears to be reasonable evidence that the student will make satisfactory progress in the future.
