Non-Citizenship and Eligibility for Federal Aid

Based on the information you provided on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the Department of Homeland Security was unable to verify your status as an eligible non-citizen.

Action Required

Ensure that the information you have provided on the FAFSA is correct. If it is not, you will need to complete a new FAFSA using the correct information.

If the information on your FAFSA is correct, please provide documentation of your status as an eligible non-citizen. Acceptable documentation includes any of the following:

  • United States Birth Certificate
  • United States Passport
  • Certificate of Naturalization
  • Permanent Resident Card* (Form I-551 since 1997) or Resident Alien Card (Form I-551 before 1997)
  • Arrival/Departure Record (CBP Form I-94) or the Departure Record (Form I-94A)
  • Refugee Travel Document Form I-571

*Provide clear copies of front and back

Why do I have to do this?

Federal regulation stipulates that federal financial aid can only be awarded to US citizens and eligible non-citizens. If a student’s eligibility cannot be confirmed by the Department of Homeland Security, it is the responsibility of the student to provide proof of eligibility. If you believe you have submitted one of the above documents in a prior year, contact our office to determine if that document has expired or not. Our office can then determine if any further action is needed.
