Independent as Unaccompanied Homeless Youth

On the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you indicated that you are one or more of the following:

  • an unaccompanied homeless youth as determined by your high school or school district homeless liaison
  • an unaccompanied homeless youth as determined by the director of an emergency shelter or transitional housing program funded by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
  • an unaccompanied homeless youth or unaccompanied youth at risk of homelessness as determined by the director of a runaway or homeless youth basic center or transitional living program

You will need to provide additional documentation before your financial aid eligibility can be determined.

Action Required

Obtain documentation of your status from the appropriate party and return it to the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships.


What if I am not an unaccompanied homeless youth?

You will need to correct your answer on the FAFSA about being an unaccompanied homeless youth to “No” and add your parent(s)’ information and signature(s) for your FAFSA to be official.

What if I have unusual circumstances but do not have documentation from my high school, HUD, or director of homeless youth basic center or transitional living program?

If you are a an unaccompanied homeless youth with unusual circumstances, provide the following:

  • A detailed personal statement that explains your current and past living situation (also address your relationship with your parents)
  • Provide information about if you are supporting yourself financially
  • Additional letters of support (preferably three) from professionals who are familiar with your situation (i.e. therapists, school counselors, members of the clergy, etc). 
  • Any additional documents that are relevant to your situation

The Financial Aid Office will review the documents and determine your dependency status.
